Patented Membrane Barrier (The Wrapper): Covered under Boveda's primary patent (US Patent 5,936,178), this specialized vapor-permeable material is legally unique because it blocks liquid water and salts from leaking out while acting as a precise gatekeeper for water vapor [US5936178A].
 
Patented Viscosity Control (The Gel Formula): Covered under Boveda's chemical formulation patents (such as US Patent 6,921,026), this proprietary blend keeps the natural salt-water solution suspended in a thickened, non-sloshing gel matrix that maintains a perfectly consistent moisture exchange rate.
 
Equilibrium control: When the case humidity is high (e.g., above 60% RH), the chemical solution draws water vapor inward. Once the air in the sealed case drops to the optimal 45–50% range, the chemical solution reaches osmotic equilibrium with the surrounding air.
